Acerca de La Maestra

I was born in Camaguey, Cuba. Prior to Fidel Castro, Camaguey had one of
the largest University in Cuba with the largest college of Education in the
island. Hence, I come from a big family of teachers. My grandparents were
educators and many of my aunts and uncles are educators now in Cuba. For
political reasons my family became exiled in the United States. I moved to
America when I was 12 years old. It was not an easy transition for me.

I spent most of my life in beautiful Miami. Miami is home to the
largest Cuban population in the United States. I grew up very poor but education
was a priority in my family. I financed my education with many hardships
and false starts. I studied Business Administration at Florida
International University and worked in the private sector for 15 years. I
moved to San Francisco in 1988 and attended San Francisco State University,
where I obtained a BA in Psychology and Child Adolescent Development. In
2000, I earned my teaching credential in Spanish, Health Ed and ELD. I love
learning. I hope to eventually return full time to school and someday earn
a Ph.D in Cross Cultural Anthropology.

Before coming to Woodside, I worked for 14 years at Fremont Unified,
I won numerous teaching awards and held several positions, such as
BTSA, World Language Department Chair, District Chair,
Latino Coordinator to name a few. I also started the Native Speaker
program at the District Level by addressing the importance of the program to the
School Board and designing the curriculum for inclusion to the A-G list .

In addition to working in the World Language area, I also taught AVID and Health
Education. I have worn many hats in an effort to improve programs and student
success.

I love teaching, it is not what I do, it is who I am.
